There are two primary techniques involved in designing IIR filters. While filters will usually be designed by software, it is a good idea to know the techniques involved in designing the filter so the designer has some idea of what the software is trying to accomplish, and what methods it is using to meet these goals. However, it does mangle the phase and make designing and implementing the filter more complicated. Adding feedback allows the equation to contain 5–10 times fewer coefficients than their FIR counterparts. This class of filters is called Infinite Impulse Response (IIR). Robert Oshana, in DSP for Embedded and Real-Time Systems, 2012 Adding feedback using IIR filtersĪnother class of digital filters is built by incorporating feedback into the equation. If an even-order response results you can go back and remove the last notch if you wish. If you are synthesizing an elliptic response for the first time and you are uncertain what order of response will result, answer “NO” when asked if you want to remove the last notch.

Note: The last notch can be removed only from an even-order elliptic filter. Removing the last notch from the series eliminates the need for the external op amp, but does change the response slightly, as we will see. To create a notch from the last in a series of cascaded 2nd order stages, an external op amp will be required to sum the highpass and lowpass outputs. An elliptic filter creates notches by summing the highpass and lowpass outputs of 2nd order stages. This question requires a bit of explanation. When we have entered the other parameters, FilterCAD asks “Remove highest f n?” (Y/N). In the case of an elliptic response we have one additional question to answer before the response is synthesized. We’ll specify a maximum passband ripple of 0.1dB, an attenuation of 60dB, a corner frequency of 1000Hz, and a stopband frequency of 1300Hz. Bob Dobkin, Jim Williams, in Analog Circuit Design, 2013 Two elliptic examplesįor our next example, we will design a lowpass filter with an elliptic response.
